Inheritance Acceptance in Georgia

In Georgia, in order to accept an inheritance, an heir should generally apply to a notary and declare their intention to accept the inheritance within 6 months from the date of the testator’s death. Under Georgian law, inheritance may also be accepted by taking actual possession of the estate; however, in practice, timely application to a notary remains the safest and most effective route.

If the heir misses the 6-month statutory period, acceptance of the inheritance may become significantly more complicated and may require court proceedings, which can involve additional time, costs, and legal risks.

Metreveli & Partners can assist you with the inheritance process in Georgia, including communication with the notary, preparation of the required documents, legal advice and, where necessary, court representation.
